SME union demands job reinstatement 17 years after LyFC dissolution
Seventeen years after the dissolution of the state-owned company Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC), the Mexican Electricians' Union (SME) continues to demand the restoration of jobs and labor rights for its members.
José Luis Castillo García, SME General Subsecretary for the Toluca division, stated that the union is awaiting a formal response from the Federal Government regarding a proposal submitted in 2024. The initiative, led by national leader Martín Esparza Flores, seeks to reintegrate approximately 16,599 electricians into the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) or its subsidiaries while recognizing their union representation.
The workers, many of whom refused liquidation following the company's extinction, maintain monthly mobilizations to keep their demands active. The union has also announced plans for a march from their offices in Mexico City to the Zócalo to reiterate their request for reinstatement.
