Research suggests smiling can influence mood and health

Scientific research indicates that the physical act of smiling can influence emotional experiences and provide modest health benefits. This concept, known as the facial feedback hypothesis, suggests that facial muscle movements send signals to the brain that can impact mood, stress levels, and emotional well-being.

A 2022 study published in Nature Human Behaviour involving 3,878 participants across 19 countries found that deliberately smiling could produce a small increase in happiness, even when individuals were not initially cheerful. Experts note that while smiling can help lower cortisol levels and serve as a coping tool for stress or anxiety, it is not a replacement for professional mental health treatment.

Psychologists, including Stanford University professor Jeanne Tsai, highlight that while social interaction plays a role, the physical sensation of a smile can independently affect how a person experiences emotions.
