Actor Mandy Patinkin Chooses Human Composting Over Cremation

Actor Mandy Patinkin, 73, announced on his “Don’t Listen to Us” podcast that he wants his body to be composted after death. He said he is “claustrophobic” and uncomfortable with traditional burial or cremation, citing personal and cultural reasons, including the trauma associated with cremation from his visit to Auschwitz. Patinkin explained that human composting involves placing the body in a vessel with organic material, where controlled heat, oxygen and moisture break it down over about a month, turning it into soil that can be returned to his family. He described the process as “free to go to the Olam Haba, the world beyond, as complete,” and expressed enthusiasm for becoming “mulch, food, soil.” The idea was introduced to him by a guest named Robyn, who discussed her husband’s similar wish for an earth‑friendly burial.
