Smithsonian ‘Americans’ exhibit to visit Atmore, Alabama

The Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition ‘Americans’ is scheduled to arrive at the Strand Theater in Atmore, Alabama, from September 16 through November 4. The exhibition, which is free to the public, explores how American Indian images, names, stories, and cultures have influenced United States history and popular culture.

This visit is part of a five-community Alabama tour that includes Wetumpka, Florence, Scottsboro, and Foley. The exhibition is presented locally through a partnership between Pride of Atmore and the Poarch Creek Indians, Alabama’s only federally recognized tribe. The tour is facilitated by the Alabama Humanities Alliance as part of the commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Originally developed by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the exhibit is part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service’s ‘Museum on Main Street’ program, which aims to bring museum experiences to rural and small-town communities.
