SMK Majakir completes RM18.23 million hostel upgrade
A new RM18.23 million hostel project at SMK Majakir in Papar, Sabah, has been completed, significantly increasing student accommodation capacity. The project, which was finished on April 30, involves the construction of two two-story hostel blocks and related facilities.
According to Papar Member of Parliament Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, the new facilities will nearly double the school's capacity from 160 to 300 students. Previously, the school faced severe space constraints because existing classroom and administrative blocks had been repurposed as hostels. This makeshift arrangement forced the school to use warden rooms as student rooms and classrooms as study areas, while also lacking dedicated sick bays.
The expansion is expected to alleviate the issue of rejected hostel applications from students living far away. Furthermore, the completion of the new blocks allows the school to return the old repurposed buildings to their original function as classrooms, providing more conducive learning spaces.
