SMM 2026: Maritime security becomes a top priority in Hamburg
At the SMM 2026 maritime industry event in Hamburg, security and resilience have emerged as dominant priorities alongside decarbonization. Geopolitical uncertainty and regulatory shifts have placed a heightened emphasis on protecting sea lanes, critical maritime infrastructure, and cybersecurity.
The Maritime Security & Defence (MS&D) conference highlighted the growing importance of the military sector following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Industry leaders noted that maritime blockades, such as those seen in the Red Sea, are increasingly impacting global shipping. Discussions focused on the need for faster procurement of proven technologies and the integration of manned and unmanned systems.
While defense remains a central theme, the industry continues to pursue practical decarbonization. An Energy Efficiency Hub showcased near-term solutions, including wind propulsion and fleet optimization technologies, to improve vessel efficiency.
