Sömmerda district reports vehicle fire and serious cyclist accident
Two separate incidents have been reported in the Sömmerda district of Thuringia involving vehicle damage and injuries.
On August 10, 2026, a Toyota caught fire in Griefstedt during surveying work. The fire, likely caused by a technical defect in the engine compartment, resulted in a total loss of the vehicle and caused heat damage to a nearby parked Volkswagen. Two men, aged 26 and 33, sustained minor injuries from smoke and heat, with the 33-year-old requiring hospital treatment. Total damages are estimated at over 25,000 euros.
On August 12, 2026, a serious traffic accident occurred in Elxleben. A 59-year-old driver of a Volvo collided with a 54-year-old cyclist while attempting a left turn on Erfurter Straße. The cyclist was seriously injured and transported to a hospital, while the driver remained uninjured. Property damage from the collision is estimated at approximately 2,500 euros.
