SMSEM commemorates Union Unity Day and honors Marcelo Quezada

Jenaro Martínez Reyes, General Secretary of the Union of Teachers at the Service of the State of Mexico (SMSEM), led the commemoration of Union Unity Day. The event included a posthumous tribute to former leader Marcelo Quezada Ferreira, who passed away on July 30.

Quezada Ferreira was recognized for his role between 1997 and 2000 in promoting the Law of Labor for Public Servants of the State and Municipalities, which replaced a legal statute that had been in place for over 59 years. He was also credited with convening the IV Extraordinary State Council, which established direct and secret voting for union elections.

During the ceremony, Martínez Reyes emphasized the importance of unity through respect and empathy despite ideological differences. He also noted the support of the State of Mexico government, led by Delfina Gómez, highlighting the need for respectful dialogue between the union and state authorities.
