Smuggling gangs escalate violence with weapons and aggressive maritime tactics

In Spain, a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court has opened the door to prosecuting smugglers for piracy. This legal precedent follows a case involving a Czech national whose vessel intentionally collided with a Spanish customs boat in 2023, resulting in the death of an officer. The court upheld a sentence of 20 years for the individual, acknowledging the act as piracy. Consequently, Spanish prosecutors have instructed law enforcement to more rigorously document the aggressive maneuvers of smuggling vessels to facilitate piracy charges in future maritime interceptions.
