Smyrna: Book presentation explores the history of Greek education in Ionia
Archaeologist and historian Eleni Rapti presented her book, ‘Smyrna, the Cauldron of Ionia – The Education of the Greeks,’ at Estia Neas Smyrni. The work explores the role of education in the spiritual life of Smyrna and its impact on the identity of the Greeks of Ionia prior to 1922.
The book details the development of Greek education in the region, covering institutions such as the Evangelical School, various public and private schools, and girls' high schools. It also examines the ambitious Ionian University project, which was unable to welcome its first students due to the historical circumstances of the era. The event featured commentary from Dimitrios Drosos, Dean of the School of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and was coordinated by Nikolaos Kourkoumelis.
