Snake behavior: Why appliances are common hiding spots

As temperatures drop during late summer and autumn, snakes may seek shelter inside homes, garages, and basements to find stable warmth. Experts note that these ectothermic animals rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature.

A primary hiding spot identified by specialists is the narrow space behind large household appliances, such as refrigerators, freezers, and washing machines. The area between the back of the device and the wall provides a dark, cramped, and undisturbed environment. Additionally, the condenser coils and motors of these appliances emit heat, creating a microclimate that can be significantly warmer than the surrounding room.

Other potential hiding locations include behind wardrobes, under furniture, among boxes, or along walls. Snakes are also attracted to these areas by moisture and the presence of prey, such as mice. To avoid risk, experts advise against reaching into these dark spaces with bare hands, suggesting the use of a flashlight to inspect potential hiding spots instead.
