Snake plants and their impact on bedroom air quality
Snake plants (Sansevieria trifasciata) are frequently kept in bedrooms due to their unique biological characteristics and potential health benefits. As a CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) plant, the snake plant opens its stomata at night to exchange gases, a trait that distinguishes it from many other common houseplants.
Research, including a 2024 study published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research, suggests that snake plants can absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde and benzene under laboratory conditions. While these plants may contribute to improved indoor air quality by filtering certain pollutants found in furniture and building materials, experts note that they are not a substitute for proper ventilation or air purifiers in poorly ventilated spaces.
