Snake safety: How to react to snakes shedding or laying eggs

When encountering snakes in a residential garden, safety experts advise maintaining distance and avoiding direct interference, particularly during sensitive biological processes like shedding or egg-laying.

If a snake is observed shedding its skin, it is important to note that its vision may be temporarily impaired due to fluid buildup between skin layers, which can make the animal unpredictable. Individuals should avoid approaching to take photos, poking the snake with sticks, or attempting to assist the shedding process. The recommended action is to retreat slowly and keep children and pets away from the area.

Similarly, if a snake is found laying eggs, the primary goal is to prevent the situation from escalating. Attempting to drive the snake away using water, brooms, or other tools may cause it to hide in inaccessible areas like crevices or under furniture, making the entire garden unsafe. Experts suggest leaving the snake and the eggs undisturbed in their current location so the exact position of the threat remains known, while ensuring all residents and pets remain indoors.
