Snakebite mortality efforts advance through biotech and community training

Global efforts to combat snakebite fatalities are advancing through both biotechnological research and community-based medical initiatives. Research suggests that nanobodies—tiny versions of antibodies—could offer a superior alternative to traditional horse-based antivenoms. Because nanobodies are smaller, they can move through tissue more rapidly to neutralize venom before permanent damage occurs, and they can be produced in microbes rather than animals.

In India, where snakebites account for approximately 58,000 deaths annually, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched the “Zero Snakebite Death Initiative.” This program, known as SARPA (Snakebite Awareness, Response, Prevention and Action), focuses on community empowerment. In the Sivasagar district of Assam, capacity-building workshops are being held to train volunteers to identify venomous snakes, recognize life-threatening symptoms, and promote timely medical intervention to reduce mortality rates.
