Snam celebrates 85 years of industrial and energy history in Italy
Snam, the Italian energy infrastructure company, celebrated its 85th anniversary at an event in Rome attended by President Sergio Mattarella and various government ministers. Founded in 1941 as the Società Nazionale Metanodotti, the company has played a central role in Italy's industrial development, from post-war reconstruction to the modern era.
During the celebrations, Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin highlighted the strategic importance of energy networks and gas storage. He noted that Italy has reached 90% gas storage capacity, meeting European Union targets ahead of schedule. Snam CEO Agostino Scornajenchi emphasized that gas remains a critical resource for ensuring energy security and flexibility when other sources are unavailable.
Alessandro Zehentner, President of Snam and the Snam Foundation, also addressed the company's social initiatives. These include supporting recovery communities for drug addiction, hosting Ukrainian orphans, and repurposing land seized from the mafia in Corleone for agricultural projects, such as avocado and olive plantations.
