Snam reports 85% gas storage and seeks to extend Piombino regasifier
Snam CEO Agostino Scornajenchi has announced that gas storage levels have surpassed 85%, with expectations to reach 90% before the end of the summer season on October 31. The company highlighted the strategic importance of the Piombino and Ravenna regasification plants and the Azerbaijan pipeline in maintaining market stability during energy crises.
To ensure long-term energy security, Snam is seeking to extend the presence of the Italis LNG vessel in the port of Piombino. While a previous compromise limited the vessel's stay to three years, a new environmental impact assessment submitted to the Ministry of Environment does not specify a time limit. Snam is considering solutions that align with the operational horizons of other regasification terminals, which could span approximately twenty years. This move is driven by rising gas demand and projected increases in energy consumption from data centers.
Local authorities in Piombino and the Tuscany region have previously expressed opposition to the vessel's long-term presence, though no official position has been released regarding the latest application. The Italian government's support for maintaining the regasifier may lead to discussions regarding territorial compensation agreements.
