SNAP benefits decline as new federal work requirements take effect

Approximately 5.7 million Americans have lost Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits following the enactment of the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ (OBBBA). Signed into law by President Trump on July 4, 2025, the legislation extended work requirements for the program to individuals up to age 64.

An analysis by the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) indicates a significant drop in enrollment due to these changes. While the White House has suggested that people are being ‘lifted off’ the program due to a stronger economy, anti-hunger experts and recipients argue that many are losing aid because they cannot find employment despite the rising costs of groceries and utilities.
