Snapchat Blocks Fully AI‑Generated Videos from Spotlight Recommendations

Snap Inc. announced that videos created entirely by generative AI will no longer be eligible for recommendation in the platform’s Spotlight feed, which surfaces short‑form videos from creators worldwide. The company said the move targets “low‑quality, repetitive, AI‑generated content” and is intended to keep Spotlight a space for authentic, human‑made creativity. Content that is edited, enhanced, or otherwise created with Snapchat’s own AI tools remains eligible for recommendation and will carry a transparency label. The policy does not prevent users from posting fully AI‑generated videos elsewhere on Snapchat; it only removes them from the recommendation algorithm that drives discovery and payout eligibility. Snap reported that the number of unique contributors to Spotlight has risen by more than 120 % over the past year, though it did not disclose how much of that growth is attributable to AI‑assisted creation. The change was announced on July 31, 2026, and aligns with similar actions taken by other platforms such as LinkedIn, which introduced a dedicated “AI slop” reporting button.
