SNCF fined for 2014 train collision in Denguin
The Pau criminal court has fined the French national railway company, SNCF, 128,250 euros for ‘involuntary injuries’ following a 2014 train collision near Denguin in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The accident, which occurred on July 17, 2014, involved a regional TER train striking the rear of a TGV that was traveling at low speed on the same track, resulting in 36 injuries.
Investigations revealed that the collision was caused by technical failures. Rodents had damaged electrical cables, creating a false contact that caused a signal to turn green prematurely. This led the TER driver to resume movement even though the track section was still occupied by the TGV. Despite emergency braking, the collision occurred at 95 km/h.
During the proceedings, legal representatives for SNCF Réseau argued for acquittal, claiming they held no direct responsibility as they were not in charge of maintenance at the time. SNCF defense lawyers noted that the company had already paid over 950,000 euros in compensation to victims. The SNCF has not ruled out an appeal against the conviction.
