SNCF faces heavy losses from climate disruptions and high holiday demand

The French national railway company, SNCF, is facing significant financial and operational challenges due to extreme weather and seasonal demand. CEO Jean Castex reported a revenue loss of 80 million euros during the summer season alone, bringing the total year-to-date loss to 180 million euros. These losses stem from train cancellations, delays, and the costs of passenger assistance, including hotel stays, taxis, and meals necessitated by climate-related disruptions such as heatwaves and wildfires.

Operational data shows that summer 2026 saw double the number of train cancellations and delays compared to the previous year. To mitigate future risks, SNCF is implementing a climate adaptation plan aimed at 2027, which includes infrastructure reinforcement and improved train air conditioning.

Simultaneously, the company is managing the high-pressure launch of holiday season ticket sales. Despite recent technical issues with the SNCF Connect platform, demand remains intense, with millions of tickets being sold as travelers navigate rising prices driven by yield management algorithms.
