SNCF to launch new TGV M high-speed trains in November

SNCF will debut its fifth-generation high-speed train, the TGV M, on November 6, running on the Paris-Marseille route. Developed by Alstom and marketed under the TGV Inoui brand, the new modular trains are designed to be more sustainable than previous models. According to SNCF, the TGV M produces 32 percent less CO2 and consumes 20 percent less energy due to an improved aerodynamic design, while maintenance costs are expected to decrease by 30 percent.

The rollout follows several delays caused by technical issues involving batteries and passenger boarding systems for those with reduced mobility. The introduction was originally intended for late 2023 and later rescheduled for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The new trains can accommodate 740 passengers and feature emergency batteries that maintain lighting, air conditioning, and toilets during power failures, allowing the train to travel 40 to 60 kilometers to exit high-speed lines.
