Sánchez Ramírez diversifies economy through mining and agriculture

The province of Sánchez Ramírez in the Dominican Republic is diversifying its economy beyond its historical reliance on metallic mining. While mining remains a core activity, the region is seeing growth in non-metallic mining, such as limestone and marble, as well as in construction, commerce, and tourism.

Agriculture serves as another economic pillar, with significant production of rice, pineapple, coffee, and cocoa, alongside livestock activities. The province plays a notable role in the national rice industry, hosting numerous processing plants that industrialize a significant portion of the country's rice production.

Francisco Sánchez, president of the local Chamber of Commerce and Production, advocates for increased industrialization to move beyond the export of raw materials. He suggests that transforming products locally would attract more investment and external economic resources, noting that the Cotuí free trade zone presents a key opportunity for this transition.
