Sándor Csoóri: Remembering the Hungarian poet and political figure
The tenth anniversary of the passing of Sándor Csoóri, a prominent Hungarian poet, writer, and essayist, is marked. A recipient of the Kossuth Prize and titled Artist of the Nation, Csoóri was a defining figure in 20th-century Hungarian literature and public life.
Throughout his career, he served as a leader of the intellectual and political opposition, was a founding member of the Hungarian Democratic Forum and the Digital Literary Academy, and was a key initiator for the establishment of Duna TV. His literary works include titles such as ‘Felröppen a madár’, ‘Menekülés a magányból’, and ‘Harangok zúgnak bennem’.
Due to his opposition to the prevailing political powers during the 1960s, Csoóri was closely monitored by authorities. Thousands of pages of surveillance reports were compiled regarding him, which have been released in a series titled ‘The Observed Man’ since 2020.
