Snälltåget to test direct night train service between Malmö and Trondheim
The Swedish private train operator Snälltåget is conducting a trial run to establish a direct night train connection between Malmö and Trondheim. Scheduled for September 5–6, 2026, the test trip aims to extend the existing Malmö–Storlien night service through the border into Norway.
This development is made possible by the recent electrification of the Meråker Line (Storlien–Trondheim). If the trial is successful, the company intends to launch regular service on this route by next summer. The route will include stops in Stockholm, Åre, and Hell, providing passengers with connections to the Nordlandsbanen toward Bodø.
Marco Andersson, commercial director at Snälltåget, stated that the trial serves as a full-scale test to ensure all systems function correctly. This marks the first time direct passenger trains have operated between southern Sweden and Trondheim since the turn of the millennium.
