Snow chain mandate issued for Großglockner High Alpine Road

A cold front has brought low temperatures and winter weather conditions to the Alps, leading to a mandatory snow chain requirement for motorized vehicles on the Großglockner High Alpine Road. The mandate was effective from Saturday afternoon until Sunday at noon, covering the stretch between Fusch in Salzburg and Heiligenblut in Carinthia.

Authorities cited snowfall and icy road surfaces as the primary reasons for the restriction. Cyclists are advised against using the road at this time, and two-wheeled vehicle operators may face short-term closures during early morning or morning hours due to the risk of water from melting snowwalls refreezing on the pavement.
