SNP MP Dave Doogan urged to back Westminster inquiry into Peter Murrell scandal

SNP Westminster leader Dave Doogan has faced criticism for refusing to support a Scottish Affairs Committee inquiry into the Peter Murrell embezzlement scandal. All other committee members back a probe, while Doogan argues it would be a "party political stunt" and a waste of taxpayers’ money.

The SNP leadership, including John Swinney, has blocked a Holyrood‑led investigation, and the Scottish Greens have sided with the party. Opposition parties – the Tories, Labour and the Liberal Democrats – are pressing Doogan to put “country before party” and allow the Westminster inquiry to proceed. Murrell recently pleaded guilty to embezzlement, heightening calls for a parliamentary investigation into the party’s finances and any safeguards that failed.

If the Scottish Affairs Committee moves forward, Doogan would be the sole SNP member on the committee and could be compelled to defend the party’s position amid growing demands for transparency.
