Dominican Republic health ministry inspects eight hospitals amid neonatal mortality concerns
The Dominican Republic Ministry of Public Health has launched a simultaneous technical intervention across eight major hospitals to address rising maternal and infant mortality and morbidity rates. This measure follows reports of approximately 30 newborn deaths at the Maternidad Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia between July and August.
Minister of Public Health Víctor Atallah stated that the operation is a technical assessment rather than an administrative takeover. Five specialized teams are evaluating critical areas, including epidemiological surveillance, infection control, water quality, sanitation, waste management, adherence to clinical protocols, and the availability of medical supplies and infrastructure safety.
The assessment phase is expected to last a maximum of 15 days. Following the review, each facility will receive an individualized report with mandatory corrective actions and specific deadlines. The results will be presented to the Health Cabinet, coordinated by the Vice Presidency of the Republic.
In a related development, the National Health Service (SNS) has appointed Freddy Manuel Novas as the new National Maternal and Child Director to strengthen oversight in these critical areas.
