SNTE leader pledges to defend teacher rights and benefits in Mexico

Alfonso Cepeda Salas, general secretary of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), has pledged to defend the rights of teachers for the upcoming school cycle. He stated that the union will work toward establishing a new pension system, improving salaries, and securing better benefits through dialogue and negotiation with authorities.

Cepeda Salas noted that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo recognizes the SNTE as the legal representative for teachers and administrative staff under the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP). He emphasized that the union's path involves negotiation rather than submission.

In a separate context regarding labor stability, educators in Yucatán have expressed frustration over the lack of permanent teaching positions (plazas). Critics have questioned the transparency of local officials regarding contract availability and have voiced opposition to proposals by Secretary of Public Education Mario Delgado to bring in teachers from Cuba while domestic educators continue to wait for job security.
