SNTE Section 30 chief Arnulfo Rodríguez says he won his union post against the odds

Arnulfo Rodríguez Treviño, the secretary‑general of Section 30 of Mexico’s teachers union (SNTE), told reporters that his career has been defined by fighting “against the current.” He said he has faced opposition from governments, political parties and even former allies, noting that those he once supported – former secretaries Rafael Méndez and Rigoberto Guevara – now back candidates against him.

Rodríguez emphasized his humble, rural background and his commitment to rank‑and‑file teachers, declaring, “No adores el becerro de oro porque no te va a dar nada.” He stressed that he has never held elected political office, adding that he is speaking with the Tamaulipas state government as part of his duty to the union base.
