São Bernardo do Campo building collapse leaves four injured

A residential building collapsed on Saturday morning in the Jardim Calux neighborhood of São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. The incident, which occurred around 6:00 AM during heavy rain, resulted in at least four people being rescued from the rubble. The victims, including a child and a teenager, were transported to local hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition.

The collapse occurred adjacent to a construction site managed by the Companhia de Desenvolvimento Habitacional e Urbano (CDHU), a state housing agency. Residents have alleged that they had previously reported cracks in the structure to the agency, though CDHU President Reinaldo Iapequino stated he had no personal knowledge of these reports. The city government has announced it will investigate whether the ongoing CDHU works contributed to the structural failure.

As a preventive measure, authorities have cordoned off the area and evacuated residents from three neighboring properties. Approximately twenty people have been displaced and are being provided temporary accommodation in local hotels. Investigations by the Civil Defense and technical experts are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
