São Caetano do Sul tops first Greater São Paulo Inequality Map

The first Mapa da Desigualdade of the Região Metropolitana de São Paulo was released on 6 May by the Instituto Cidades Sustentáveis and the Rede Nossa São Paulo. It evaluates 39 municipalities with 40 indicators across nine domains – health, education, public safety, housing, transport, infrastructure, environment, culture, and work‑income – to reveal how access to rights and services varies within the region of more than 21 million residents.

São Caetano do Sul leads the ranking with 29 points, while the capital São Paulo ranks 16th with 23.5 points. Taboão da Serra placed 30th (21.37 points), Embu das Artes 35th (20.46 points) and Itapecerica da Serra 36th (20.10 points). The study highlights a life‑expectancy gap of up to 16 years between municipalities, underscoring deep social and territorial inequalities in the Greater São Paulo area.
