São Domingos do Cariri garment industry drives local economy

The municipality of São Domingos do Cariri, located in the interior of Paraíba, Brazil, has established itself as a significant hub for the garment industry. With a population of just over 2,000 inhabitants, the town produces more than 40,000 pieces of clothing per week, serving various regions across the country.

The sewing tradition is deeply rooted in the local identity, dating back to a dedicated festival established in 1980. For many families, the craft is a multi-generational source of income. Local seamstress Dona Inácia and her daughter, Lievânia Pereira, operate a business specializing in dresses that produces approximately 1,500 pieces weekly for digital platform clients.

The industry has seen significant growth due to the expansion of internet sales and digital platforms. This technological shift has allowed local producers to reach customers in distant states, including Rio Grande do Sul, Maranhão, Rio de Janeiro, and Goiás. One local entrepreneur, João Tavares Dantas, manages a team of 40 professionals to meet the national demand facilitated by online commerce.
