São José and Teresópolis municipalities announce new IPTU rules

The municipality of São José (Brazil) set a deadline of July 31 for residents to request exemption from the Urban Property and Land Tax (IPTU). Eligible applicants include retirees, disability benefit recipients, and people aged 60 or older who meet municipal criteria. The exemption, valid for five years, can be applied for digitally, and the IPTU bill is now issued only in digital format.

In Teresópolis, the city council approved Law Complementary No. 358, increasing early‑payment discounts for IPTU, fees and contributions. Taxpayers who pay by 5 January receive a 20 % discount, 15 % for payments by 31 January, and 10 % for payments by 29 February. The measure, signed by Mayor Leonardo Vasconcellos, aims to boost early compliance and municipal cash flow.

Both initiatives reflect local efforts to simplify tax procedures and encourage timely payment of IPTU in their respective municipalities.
