São José de Mipibu cemetery worker fired after family digs father's grave

In São José de Mipibu, a city in the Natal metropolitan area of Brazil, a family was forced to complete the excavation of their father's grave at the Municipal Cemetery of Mendes because the on‑site worker left the pit only partially opened and declined to finish the work. The relatives used shovels and other tools to finish the grave so the burial could proceed as scheduled, recording the scene on video, which sparked public outrage.

The municipal administration responded on July 27 by immediately exonerating the cemetery employee, describing his conduct as “reproachable” and “incompatible with municipal procedures.” The city also announced it would pursue legal action against the former worker and noted that the cemetery’s regular maintenance and renovation program would continue.

The incident was treated as an isolated case, prompting the municipality to reaffirm its commitment to cemetery upkeep and to schedule revitalisation work within the next 60 days.
