São José do Rio Preto officials questioned over cancelled restaurant project

The Public Defender's Office of the State of São Paulo and the Public Ministry are demanding explanations from the municipal government of São José do Rio Preto regarding the cancellation of a planned 'popular restaurant' project.

The project, intended to serve vulnerable populations in the northern region of the city, was suspended despite an investment of R$ 1.4 million. These funds were reportedly used for property leasing on Mirassolândia Avenue and the acquisition of essential operational equipment.

Local authorities expressed concern over the management of these public resources, especially as reports indicate that at least 5,600 residents face food insecurity. The restaurant was originally a 2023 commitment aimed at providing 1,000 affordable meals daily.
