The Museu Histórico Municipal Gilberto Gerlach in São José, Santa Catarina, preserves a significant relic from 1845: a sword gifted by Emperor Dom Pedro II to Colonel Luiz Ferreira do Nascimento Mello. The gift was a symbol of friendship and recognition during the Emperor's first visit to the region, which aimed to strengthen ties between the Empire and southern provinces following the Farrapos War.

The museum is housed in a colonial Luso-Brazilian mansion built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was designated as state heritage in 1980 and currently holds over 3,000 pieces, including weaponry, porcelain, and religious objects, documenting more than 250 years of local history.
