São Luís City Council to debate kitesurfing regulation and safety

The São Luís City Council will hold a public hearing on Monday at 2:00 p.m. to discuss the regulation, safety, and sports tourism potential of kitesurfing in the city. The meeting, organized by Councilman Cléber Verde Filho through the Commission on Education, Culture, Sports, and Leisure, aims to establish guidelines for the activity and organize the locations used by practitioners.

The initiative follows the death of 29-year-old kitesurfer Alan Wesley Pinto Ribeiro in August. Ribeiro disappeared while practicing at São Marcos Beach and his body was later recovered at Bonfim Beach. The incident prompted significant discussion regarding safety conditions for the sport in the capital.

Invited participants include representatives from municipal secretariats for tourism, sports, environment, and urbanism, as well as the Maranhão Port Authority, the Military Fire Brigade, and the Municipal Guard, alongside members of the kitesurfing community.
