São Luís holidays drive retail activity and regional tourism

The upcoming holidays on September 7, Brazil's Independence Day, and September 8, the anniversary of São Luís, are expected to impact both tourism and local commerce in Maranhão.

In São Luís, an agreement between Fecomércio-MA and the Sindicato dos Comerciários allows retail stores, galleries, and shopping centers to operate during the holidays. Street stores may operate from 8:00 to 18:00, while shopping centers will extend hours from 10:00 to 22:00. Under the collective bargaining agreement, employees working these days must receive a 100% hourly wage increase and a fixed gratification of R$ 53. Employers are prohibited from using time banks or compensatory leave for these shifts.

Simultaneously, the holiday window presents a travel opportunity for those seeking destinations outside the traditional tourism circuits. The city of Tutóia is highlighted as a strategic location for accessing the Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses and the Parnaíba River Delta. September is considered a peak period for the region due to favorable winds for kitesurfing and the presence of water in the lagoons.
