São Luís hosts major film festivals in Maranhão

The city of São Luís is hosting significant audiovisual events. The 49th edition of the Festival Guarnicê de Cinema will take place from August 20 to 26. The opening ceremony, held at Cinépolis São Luís Shopping, will feature the film ‘Resta Um’, directed by Fernando Ceylão, and include tributes to actress Marcélia Cartaxo and actor Romulo Estrela.

Additionally, the festival will honor filmmaker Frederico Machado with a special session of his film ‘Terra Devastada’. The event includes competitive showcases for music videos, short films, and feature films from both Maranhão and across Brazil.

Separately, the Maranhão na Tela Festival is accepting registrations for its upcoming edition, scheduled for September 22 to 26. This year’s event will focus exclusively on the Maranhão Cinema Showcase and will not be competitive. Submissions are open until August 20 for films and music videos produced in Maranhão, including fiction, animation, experimental, and documentary works.
