São Paulo Animal Protection Unit Records 14,288 Abuse Reports in First Half of 2026

The São Paulo Civil Police’s Electronic Animal Protection Delegacy (Depa) logged 14,288 animal‑abuse complaints between January and June 2026, averaging about 78 reports per day. The online platform, launched in 2016, allows citizens to file reports via computer or mobile, requiring identification but offering data confidentiality. Most cases involve domestic dogs subjected to confinement, deprivation of food or water, or illegal breeding conditions. After submission, complaints are routed to regional police units for investigation, signalling heightened public awareness of animal welfare violations.

In a separate incident in Paragominas, Pará, an anonymous tip led officers to a barbershop where a dead dog was found and another dog was confined in the bathroom. The shop’s owner, Eliomar Silva, was arrested on animal‑cruelty charges. The two cases illustrate active enforcement of Brazil’s animal‑protection laws.
