São Paulo announces R$ 12.8 million investment for elderly support

The city of São Paulo has announced a R$ 12.8 million investment to support organizations dedicated to the rights of citizens aged 60 and older. Through a new public notice, up to 32 social organizations may receive grants of up to R$ 400,000 each to promote and protect the elderly population.

This initiative is part of the ‘Vitalidade + São Paulo’ program, which coordinates over 80 initiatives across 21 secretariats, with a projected investment of R$ 16.29 billion through 2029. The program addresses health, social assistance, mobility, housing, and income generation to manage the city's rapid demographic shift. According to 2022 Census data, elderly residents now make up 17.7% of São Paulo's population, a figure expected to reach 30% by 2050.

To support this demographic, the city maintains an extensive socio-assistance network consisting of 162 exclusive services, providing over 18,000 vacancies. This network includes Elderly Coexistence Nuclei (NCIs) for socialization, Day Centers (CDIs) for daytime care, and Long-Term Care Institutions (ILPIs) and Special Reception Centers (CAEs) for those in vulnerable situations. These efforts contributed to São Paulo receiving the ‘Age-Friendly City’ designation from the World Health Organization.
