São Paulo audit finds landfill violations in Campinas area

The Tribunal de Contas do Estado de São Paulo (TCE‑SP) conducted an inspection on Thursday, 18 May, covering waste‑management practices in 203 municipalities across the state. The audit focused on four cities in the Campinas region—Amparo, Mogi Guaçu, Monte Alegre do Sul and Monte Mor. Inspectors documented accumulated trash, illegal dumping of construction debris, syringes and personal‑protective equipment, the presence of scavengers, birds and vultures, and an illegal fire at a decommissioned landfill in Monte Mor that required a fire‑truck to control.

Municipal authorities acknowledged the problems. Amparo said it is already monitoring the site and planning more frequent collection, while Monte Mor announced intensified cleaning, fencing and surveillance to prevent further incidents. The findings highlight shortcomings in local solid‑waste management and raise concerns for public health and environmental safety in the region.
