São Paulo creche death of 1‑year‑old sparks investigation of five staff
On 22 July 2026 a baby, Abdoulaye Dieng, aged one year and four months, died after his head became trapped in a metal grille at the Centro de Educação Infantil (CEI) Luz do Brás in São Paulo. Police Civil recorded the case as involuntary homicide (homicídio culposo) and are investigating five professionals of the centre, including its director and coordinator.
The child was taken to the UPA Mooca by creche staff but did not survive. The room where the incident occurred has been sealed since 24 July and is undergoing technical analysis. The Municipal Education Secretariat (SME) has dismissed two employees, opened an administrative procedure, and warned that the partner organisation could be de‑credentialed if irregularities are confirmed. The São Paulo mayor’s office and the public‑servants’ union have also commented on the incident, calling for tighter oversight of private‑run creches.
