São Paulo Court Issues Rulings on Police-Related Crimes
The São Paulo Court of Justice (TJSP) rejected, for the fifth time, a request to place two military police officers in preventive detention for the November 2024 shooting death of 22‑year‑old medical student Marco Aurélio Cardenas Acosta. The court held that the officers, accused of homicide, can remain free on alternative measures while awaiting a jury trial, rejecting the family’s plea for imprisonment.
In a separate case, the same court upheld the continued detention of two suspects accused of providing logistical support for the June 2024 attack that left Rota lieutenant Ronickson Pimentel dos Santos gravely injured after he was shot in the head. The judges found no irregularities in the temporary arrest orders and kept the suspects in custody pending further investigation.
