São Paulo Court Orders 90‑Day Plan to Reduce Overcrowding at Americana Detention Center

A civil action filed by public prosecutor Rafael Fernandes Viana of the 9th Public Prosecutor's Office in Americana led a São Paulo judge to issue a preliminary injunction ordering the state to curb overcrowding at the Centro de Detenção Provisória (CDP) AEVP Renato Gonçalves Rodrigues. The facility, built for 639 inmates, was holding 1,190 – an excess of 551 prisoners.

The court mandated that no new admissions be accepted and that excess inmates be transferred within 90 days. Within the same period the state must correct sanitary deficiencies identified by the health surveillance agency, and within 180 days it must obtain the fire‑safety certification (AVCB) and remedy fire‑prevention shortcomings. Failure to comply will incur a daily fine of R$ 10,000.
