São Paulo educators protest school closures and teacher hiring policies

Teachers and students in São Paulo are protesting against changes to the state education system. The Apeoesp union organized a demonstration at the Domingos Peixoto State School in São Bernardo to oppose the potential closure of night classes. According to the union, the State Secretariat of Education (Seduc) informed the school that second-year high school classes would be eliminated by 2027, leaving only third-year classes. Protesters argue this decision disproportionately affects students who work during the day and rely on night classes to complete their education.

Separately, state deputy Professora Bebel has criticized Governor Tarcísio de Freitas for authorizing a new civil service exam for only 5,000 teaching positions. The deputy noted that over 100,000 candidates who passed previous exams are still awaiting summons. She argued that the decision ignores qualified professionals already available and maintains a high number of temporary contracts within the state network. Apeoesp has filed legal action to force the government to extend the validity of previous teacher exams.
