São Paulo initiative supports refugee and migrant employability

In São Paulo, a collaborative initiative titled ‘Conexões que Transformam’ (Connections that Transform) was held to support the professional integration of refugees and migrants. Organized by the Grupo Mulheres do Brasil, Konecta Brasil, and the Konecta Foundation at the Aliança Brasil Cidadã, the event provided practical tools for 136 participants representing 23 different nationalities.

The program offered workshops on employability and entrepreneurship, resume tutoring with Portuguese translation, assistance with document regularization, and direct access to job openings. According to Maria Helena Santuche, leader of the Refugee and Migrant Insertion Committee for Grupo Mulheres do Brasil, approximately 70% of the participants were unemployed, with more than half expressing an interest in starting their own small businesses.

Participants, including Venezuelan refugees, highlighted the importance of such support in overcoming barriers like language, documentation, and professional credential recognition. The initiative also included the distribution of basic food baskets and toys for children, aiming to provide both economic and social stability for those seeking to rebuild their lives in Brazil.
