São Paulo expands investigation into R$ 11 billion lighting contract

The Public Ministry of São Paulo (MPSP) has expanded its civil inquiry into a multi-billion real public-private partnership regarding public lighting in the capital. The investigation now formally includes the maintenance and modernization of the city's traffic light network, following an amendment to the original contract.

Combined, the lighting contract and the traffic light amendment total nearly R$ 11 billion. The São Paulo City Hall stated that the inclusion of traffic light services was conducted regularly and in accordance with current legislation, which allows for the addition of synergistic objects to existing concession contracts.

The municipality noted that while previous legal challenges affected the bidding process, there is currently no valid judicial decision determining the annulment of the concession contract.
