São Paulo expands smart traffic light system to reduce congestion

The São Paulo municipal government reported that 1,677 intersections now use intelligent traffic signals, an investment of R$ 725.5 million. The technology automatically adjusts signal timing to traffic flow, boosting road capacity by 5.72% and cutting congestion by 12.16% in the areas equipped. The city aims to reach 2,583 smart intersections, with 217 more in final stages and 689 projects approved.

In the first half of the year the city received 1,370 requests to revise signal timings, most from the South Zone (515). New systems being tested include a USP‑developed camera and computer‑vision solution that can cut pedestrian wait times by up to 25%, and a Google AI “Green Light” tool that has already reduced vehicle stops by about 10% at trial sites. The municipality is studying agreements to expand these technologies city‑wide.
