São Paulo expands support for homeless adults through therapeutic houses

The Government of São Paulo maintains a network of 15 residential therapeutic houses designed for adults over 18 who are experiencing homelessness and facing disorders related to psychoactive substance use. Access to these free services is provided through referrals from the public health network.

Each resident is supported by a multidisciplinary team including psychologists, social workers, educators, nutritionists, art therapists, and financial mentors. The program aims to address individual needs through integrated services in health, social assistance, and education to facilitate social reintegration.

The program follows a structured four-phase process:

1. Acolher (Welcome): Focuses on establishing basic routines, hygiene, and personal organization. 2. Despertar (Awaken): Increases participation in therapeutic, cultural, and socio-educational activities while developing life projects. 3. Transformar (Transform): Encourages the resumption of studies, skill acquisition, and entry into the labor market. 4. Caminhar (Walk): The individual moves into new housing and works toward financial self-sufficiency while maintaining technical support.
